3 issues in taxes budget with critical priority
Measure G sales tax debate
The Board set up the framework for Measure G, the 1% sales tax on the November ballot: if it passes, the county and its two cities split the revenue under newly approved agreements. County keeps roughly $9.2 million a year for public safety and roads.
November 2026 countywide sales tax ballot measure
Supervisors unanimously agreed to let voters decide a 1% sales tax projected to raise roughly $23 million a year for public safety, roads, water infrastructure and other services. Supporters say the county is at a tipping point with sheriff vacancies and cuts; opponents argue a general tax has no enforceable spending promises.
FY 2026-27 County Budget Adoption
The county faces a $5.37 million shortfall next year, which staff call structural — revenue isn't keeping up with costs, especially public safety. Eight positions would be eliminated and services like the Second Street campground and Live Oak public safety contracts may be cut. The recommended budget comes June 9.
