3 issues in parks rec with high priority
Las Palmas Park Renovation
The city's planned renovation of Las Palmas Park has split the community, with some residents opposing a dedicated cricket pitch, fencing and lights. Parks Commissioner Prakash Giri has been personally attacked over his cricket advocacy, prompting Mayor Klein and multiple council members to call for civility. Community meetings are set for November 16 and 18, and council will decide the design in the new year.
Las Palmas Park and Ortega Park field reservations
Residents warned that Ortega Park's experience — where the Sunnyvale Cricket Club booked the field every weekend — could foreshadow Las Palmas Park's future. Speakers urged inclusivity and questioned whether a Parks and Rec commissioner tied to the cricket association should recuse himself.
Lakewood Park Renovation and All-Inclusive Playground
An 11-acre park built in 1960 is getting a full rebuild — new athletic field, dog park, inclusive playground, batting cages and refreshed picnic areas. The inclusive playground must open by end of July 2026 to keep a $1.5 million county grant. Council members pushed for more shade given increasingly hot weather.
