4 issues with critical priority
Rent Stabilization Expiration
A resident said ordinance 4359's exemption for post-1995 buildings leaves her Serenity Villas community without rent stabilization, with rents rising about $118 and maintenance declining.
Restoring frozen positions and shrinking the deficit
Measure Z passed in last week's election, locking in funding for youth programs and city services. Councilmembers celebrated but Garcia pressed the city manager to hire back frozen positions so residents get their money's worth.
Pallet Yard Fire and Enforcement Sweep
After a three-alarm pallet yard fire on East Ninth Street, the city inspected all twelve pallet yards — six got stop-work orders for dangerous code violations. Garcia called the conditions, including no bathrooms and below-minimum-wage work, 'inhumane.'
ICE Operation, Police Drone, and Alleged Assaults Near City Hall
The council adopted a resolution barring city property from being used to stage federal immigration enforcement. Advocates want a stronger ordinance, an audit of city contractors with DHS ties, and limits on Flock camera data sharing.
