4 issues in public safety with high priority
SB 580 immigration policy compliance
Multiple speakers urged the city to adopt a strong local ordinance implementing SB 580, which limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, before the January 1 deadline — including covering contractors and surveillance vendors. Vice Mayor Lopez successfully requested the topic for a future agenda.
Police data platform (Peregrine) privacy concerns
The council renewed a three-year, $350,000 Peregrine license for police data analytics. Opponents called it a surveillance tool with Palantir ties, saying data is retained in perpetuity and auto-renews without council authorization; the department says it only queries the city's own CJIS-compliant data.
August 17 meeting disruption and minutes dispute
Multiple speakers said the full chamber was wrongly cleared during the August 17 meeting despite the gallery being quiet, and demanded the minutes be corrected and the meeting redone, invoking Brown Act readmittance requirements. The minutes were approved anyway as part of the consent calendar.
Officer-involved shooting of Officer Jimmy Sanchez
Mayor Adams, City Manager Gale and the police chief thanked the community for its support after an officer was ambushed and shot Thursday while tending to someone in custody. Officer Sanchez is recovering, and council members offered prayers and gratitude to the department.
