Civic Issues
Topics getting the most attention in Oakley public meetings, ranked by how frequently they are discussed.
3 issues in public safety with low priority
Time limits for public comment
Vice Mayor Meadows wants the council to consider capping the total time for the public comment period at the start of meetings, continuing overflow comments to the end — a change other cities like Concord use. Shaw supports the idea; it will come back as a future agenda item.
Police military equipment report
The police department reported on its three categories of military equipment — rifles, less-lethal launchers and drones — with drones deployed at least 12 times last year and no complaints received. A community meeting on the topic is set for May 21.
Residential rental inspection program
Oakley's exterior-only rental inspection program (OMC 4.30) covers over 1,600 parcels. The council debated its fairness — Vice Mayor Meadows wants equal standards for owner-occupied homes — and may adjust when the fee kicks in for listed-but-unrented properties.
