Monterey officials are warning that scammers are using real city addresses and permit details to make phishing messages look official. If you get a suspicious link claiming to be from the city, don’t click it—verify through official channels before paying or sharing personal info.
Datacenter Ban
A California city just became the first in the state to permanently ban data centers, and the move could shape how Monterey County handles similar projects and their huge energy demands. If other local governments follow, it could mean fewer industrial developments—and fewer fights over power and water.
Gun Store Zoning Ordinance
Monterey’s City Council is moving ahead with a zoning rule that would limit where gun shops can open. It’s not a ban, but it could reshape where firearm retailers operate—and it’s headed for more public debate.

That puts taxpayer money and promised local economic development at risk—so residents have a direct stake in how the fallout gets sorted out.
