Summary

The long-awaited sports complex (Community Park 42) won't open until spring 2027 because the turf needs more time to fill in. Youth football programs that planned to play there are crowding Joe Herb instead, creating parking headaches.

City Council/Public Finance and Economic Development Authority/Parking Authority — August 17, 2026

The city is applying for up to $5 million in state climate-bond grant money to add shade, pathways, trees and sports fields at the Regional Sports Complex. Merced was already shortlisted from about 400 applicants. If awarded, park users get a cooler, nicer complex without local tax dollars.
