Pickleball court shortage at Gellert Park
Summary
Pickleball is booming — up to 35 players crowd Gellert Park's two dedicated courts while tennis players and pickleballers clash over shared courts with no posted rules. The Commission directed staff to pilot updated rules and signage and will gather community input November 24; a full $295,000 Westlake court resurfacing remains unfunded.

Impact analysis
Updating rules and signs costs little (a couple weeks of work), but re-lining courts runs about $2,500 per court and the full Westlake resurfacing is $295,000.
Both pickleball players and tennis players get clearer rules and fairer access to the courts.
Tennis players could lose shared-court access on designated pickleball days; taxpayers would fund any resurfacing.

Pickleball players say two courts can't handle 20-24 person waitlists, with waits up to an hour, and improvised play on tennis courts is creating conflicts. The commission agendized a court usage discussion, and staff is exploring adding courts and shared scheduling.
